Investment will strengthen Coalition Publica's activities in support of discoverability and impact of social sciences and humanities research in Canada and abroad.

Coalition Publica is pleased to announce the receipt of SSHRC funding to contribute to its ongoing operations. With this support, Coalition Publica will continue to develop its services for journals, including interoperability and compliance with international standards, and contribute to research on the scholarly publishing landscape.

Initiated by the Consortium Érudit and the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), Coalition Publica is a pan-Canadian partnership that brings together key players in scholarly publishing and research in Canada and abroad, in support of an equitable, open and sustainable ecosystem for scholarly communication. Its activities are in accordance with Canada’s national open access policy and Open Science Roadmap

Coalition Publica currently supports 159 Canadian scholarly journals in the humanities and social sciences through services offered in both official languages. These services, sought by a growing number of journals, succeed in particular due to the complementarity between the research and dissemination platform erudit.org, which serves more than 3.5 million unique users per year, and PKP's Open Journal System (OJS) software, used by 10,000 scholarly journals worldwide.

SSHRC’s support was awarded to Coalition Publica through the Pan-Canadian Knowledge Access Initiative (PCKAI), following an evaluation conducted by a committee composed of experts in the social sciences and humanities research and library communities. With funding of $1M per year for the next three years, SSHRC's support complements Coalition Publica’s infrastructure funding already provided by the Canada Foundation for Innovation's Major Science Initiatives program.

More information on the PCKAI program is available on SSHRC’s website: https://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/programs-programmes/pckai-ipac-eng.aspx

Coalition Publica provides a unique opportunity to collaborate with Canadian and international communities, including:

  • 95 libraries in Canada and abroad that contribute to the Partnership for Open Access, developed with the Canadian Research Knowledge Network

  • 35 Canadian university libraries that provide OJS hosting services

  • 14 partners participating in our consultation mechanisms:

    • Advisory Committee: Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), Compute Canada, Canadian Science Publishing (CSP), Research Data Canada (RDC), Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN), and members of the Canadian HSS journal community;

About Coalition Publica

Coalition Publica is a partnership created by Érudit and the Public Knowledge Project dedicated to the advancement of research dissemination and digital publishing in the social sciences and humanities in Canada, specifically designed to support the SSH community in the transition towards sustainable open access. Coalition Publica will pursue this goal through the development of a non-commercial, open source national infrastructure dedicated to digital scholarly publishing, dissemination, and research—combining PKP’s Open Journal Systems (OJS) software and Érudit’s digital dissemination platform (erudit.org).

About Érudit

Érudit is an inter-university consortium that provides research and cultural communities with a wide range of services in digital publishing and dissemination. The Érudit platform—erudit.org—is the leading digital dissemination platform of SSH research in Canada. It hosts over 240 journals and its collections are consulted by the research community and the general public, including the users of over 1100 institutions worldwide.

About PKP

The Public Knowledge Project (PKP) is a multi-university initiative that develops open source (free) software to improve the quality and reach of scholarly publishing. PKP’s flagship software, Open Journal Systems (OJS), is a journal management and publishing system that assists with every stage of the refereed publishing process, from submissions through to online publication and indexing. Over 275 Canadian journals and over 10,000 journals worldwide use OJS.
